The Original School of Woodworking

Student Handbook

From all the back in 1977 – again revised in 1982 – we’re sharing the original handbook crafted exclusively for students enrolled in the first Mr. Sawdust Schools of Professional Woodworking.

Below you’ll find each page of the complete handbook – a genuinely wonderful collection of history, techniques and know-how – all written in an unmistakably “Mr. Sawdust style”. If you’ve read his actual book (Master the Radial Arm Saw) — published years later — you’ll recognize plenty of broad strokes and overlaps between the two. Looking back, this is basically an early draft of his book… he just didn’t necessarily know it, just yet.

As we find time, we’ll highlight certain portions or interesting excerpts with their own page. Any such pages we’ll be linked right here:
